Civilian Qualities

I am a believer in civilian behaviour.

Touched and inspired by imaginative ideas in the voluntary sector I try to take part - but because of my responsibilities I can only ever play a very minor role.  For now I live by the maxim that a little can go a long way - if it is led by others, who have made the greater sacrifice - to those who have, I hold quiet but meaningful respect.

Youth Cancer Trust

The Youth Cancer Trust provides short, holiday breaks for young people affected by cancer - but it seems to me that it isn't the holiday so much as the shared experience which offers so much.

The first time a teenager I met at Tracy Ann House, told me it was a relief to be able to joke about her wig with others who knew what she meant - I was committed.  I have been ever since.

The trust was formed by a woman who lost her only child to cancer - she is a natural rebel and the combination of deep understanding and rebellion creates a house of laughter, understanding and fun.

Amnesty International

Like everyone reading this I am concerned about Human Rights.

As a member of Amnesty International I try to keep informed and where possible lend a small hand.  I think the issue of torture motivated me more than anything else. The very notion of it is an outrage.

Contributing to the upholding of fundamental rights for all people is a civilian duty I take seriously.  Below is a widget for Amnesty blogs - you can link through to the Amnesty site and make a contribution, keep informed or become a member if you want to.
